Twenty guests maximum, ten oceanfront villas and no day visitors – Elysian takes the idea of escaping to the Whitsundays rather seriously. This adults-only retreat on Long Island is predominantly solar-powered, with chef-prepared meals, yoga, snorkeling gear, kayaks and paddleboards included. Pool lovers need to book carefully: only one villa currently comes with a private magnesium plunge pool; the others offer oceanfront decks or outdoor rain showers. There’s also a shared magnesium infinity pool and spa. We’d book that plunge-pool villa quickly, then spend a few days pretending the Great Barrier Reef belongs entirely to us.
