Part château stay, part French country-house holiday, Château Les Merles sits among the vineyards and rolling countryside of the Dordogne near Bergerac. The 17th-century estate has a gourmet restaurant, tennis and its own nine-hole golf course, but families and groups should look closely at the villas. The Excellence villas are the standouts for this site, with private heated pools, gardens, full kitchens and three or four bedrooms; other villa categories use a shared pool instead. It’s a particularly nice option when you want the freedom of a holiday home but still fancy dinner, drinks and hotel service just a short walk away.
