POD is exactly how we like our Camps Bay hotels: small, stylish and close enough to walk to the beach, restaurants and sunset cocktails without touching the car. There are only 17 rooms, plus a heated sea-facing pool, cocktail bar and 24-hour gym. Our pick would be one of the three Terrace Pool Rooms – each has a large patio and its own private plunge pool, with Twelve Apostles views and a glimpse of the ocean. The complimentary minibar is a nice touch too. Spend the morning exploring Cape Town, then make it back before sunset; Camps Bay is at its very best when the mountain turns gold. Read more

South Beach combines two things we really enjoy: the freedom of an apartment and the fun of staying right in Camps Bay. Every suite has a proper kitchen stocked daily with breakfast ingredients, so mornings can happen entirely on your own schedule. There are two hotel pools, a 24-hour gym and the beach is just around the corner, but we’d splurge on the One-Bedroom Penthouse Suite with its sea views and heated private plunge pool. Breakfast on the terrace, afternoon on Camps Bay Beach, then back upstairs with a bottle of South African wine – there’s really no need to overcomplicate this one. Read more

Vergenoegd Löw is much more than somewhere to sleep between wine tastings – this historic Stellenbosch estate could easily swallow an entire weekend. We love the mix of Cape Dutch heritage, regenerative farming, spa time and genuinely interesting food at Geuwels, not to mention the famous Indian Runner ducks marching through the estate. Pool lovers have excellent choices: Vineyard Suites feature 3 x 3 metre private plunge pools, while the Luxury Cottages get much larger pools overlooking the Winelands. Add estate wines, mountain views and slow farm-to-table lunches and suddenly that ambitious Stellenbosch itinerary starts looking very unnecessary. Read more
