From the moment we arrived at this fabulous estate in Franschhoek we started to regret that we didn’t have booked a longer stay. Because everything was totally perfect. The hotel is set in one of the most beautiful places we have ever been - nestled between mountains, vineyards and landscaped gardens. We stayed in a Chalet which was like a luxurious cottage with private pool. It featured both its own private plunge pool AND hot tub set on an intimate terrace with unrivalled views over the valley. The on-site restaurant was equally outstanding and we had an unforgettable 7 course menu together with a fantastic wine tasting! Lastly, the staff! They were exceptionally attentive, to a point where they even started assuming our needs before we even raised them. We will 100% be going back. Read more

Le Pommier is refreshingly unpretentious for the Cape Winelands. Sitting on Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, it began life as an apple orchard and today combines vineyards, mountain views, country-style accommodation and the sort of hearty food that works particularly well after a few wine tastings. Most rooms use the estate pools, but families should look at the two-bedroom self-catering unit with its own kitchen, braai area and private swimming pool. We’d use Le Pommier as a relaxed base for exploring both wine towns – although lunch, another tasting and an afternoon by the pool is a perfectly respectable alternative plan. Read more

Lord Milner is the odd one out here – and we mean that as a compliment. Staying in Matjiesfontein feels like accidentally stepping off the train in Victorian South Africa: antique-filled rooms, the historic Dining Room, the wonderfully old-fashioned Laird’s Arms pub and the quirky Red Bus Tour through this tiny Karoo village. For pool lovers, the Swimming Pool Suite is hidden in the gardens beside the river, with two bedrooms opening onto a private courtyard and its own private swimming pool. We’d come here for the history as much as the hotel – preferably followed by a Karoo lamb dinner, a pint in the pub and a little ghost hunting before bed. Read more
