It featured a private entrance leading directly to the beach and our own heated plunge pool set on a lovely furnished terrace. The panoramic sea views was breathtaking and the location of the hotel could not be better. Also available were some incredible penthouses that included a private rooftop pool for an even more luxurious experience. Three bungalows. Five acres of tropical beachfront. A private path to Mission Beach from each one. Sounds pretty good, right? Every freestanding bungalow features a king bed, kitchenette, covered deck and its own private plunge pool looking through the greenery towards the Coral Sea and Family Islands. There’s no restaurant on-site, but The Elandra is only a five-minute drive away when self-catering loses its appeal. However, we’d be far more interested in reef trips, rainforest walks and seeing just how many times a day it’s reasonable to wander between pool and beach. Read more

Maya Sanctuary is more “disappear into the Australian bush” than conventional hotel stay. Spread across 200 acres in the Blue Mountains, its handcrafted mudbrick cottages sit among forest and meadows where kangaroos and wombats are regular neighbours. Each romantic cottage has a wood-burning stove, kitchenette and private outdoor hot tub on the deck, while the Artist’s Lodge adds a wonderfully rustic creekside setting. There’s no restaurant, so bring food and settle in properly. Stars above the hot tub, fire going inside, phone forgotten somewhere – that’s really the whole point. Read more

Marcoola Beach is only a few steps away, and the one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments come with full kitchens, balconies and plenty of room for families. Certain ground-floor apartments add private plunge pools, while others have their own rooftop spa; everyone can use the two heated rooftop swimming pools with views towards the ocean and Mount Coolum. Elysian Luxury Eco Island Retreat

Twenty guests maximum, ten oceanfront villas and no day visitors – Elysian takes the idea of escaping to the Whitsundays rather seriously. This adults-only retreat on Long Island is predominantly solar-powered, with chef-prepared meals, yoga, snorkeling gear, kayaks and paddleboards included. Pool lovers need to book carefully: only one villa currently comes with a private magnesium plunge pool; the others offer oceanfront decks or outdoor rain showers. There’s also a shared magnesium infinity pool and spa. We’d book that plunge-pool villa quickly, then spend a few days pretending the Great Barrier Reef belongs entirely to us. Read more

Beresford Estate puts you right where we’d want to be in McLaren Vale: surrounded by vines with the wine tasting practically built into the stay. The Grand Reserve Suites are beautifully private, combining indoor and outdoor living with their own bathhouse, terrace and secluded private plunge pool. You can wander over to the Tasting Pavilion for Beresford wines, then continue the day at Vale Restaurant & Bar rather than worrying about driving anywhere. We suspect the hardest part of staying here would be sticking to a carefully planned winery itinerary when your own pool is staring straight across the vineyard. Read more

Aloha captures Byron Bay nicely: casual, tropical and stylish without trying too hard. The studios, villas and apartments sit among greenery around a shared saltwater pool, with breakfast supplies included and both the beach and centre of Byron within walking distance. But families or groups should look straight at the four-bedroom Kahale Beach House – it has a large kitchen, garden, BBQ area and its own private saltwater pool. Surf in the morning, wander into town for lunch, then come home and fire up the barbecue. That sounds much more Byron than following a resort timetable. Read more
