Some hotels add a few pool rooms as an afterthought; Avra Imperial has 118 private and shared pools woven through the resort. Set beside Kolymvari Bay in western Crete, its striking architecture surrounds huge lagoon-style pools, gardens and palm-lined terraces. The Residence Collection includes rooms and suites with private pools, while other categories open onto large shared swim-up pools. Food is another highlight, with five restaurants spanning Italian, Asian and beachfront Mediterranean dining, plus an APIVITA spa and excellent kids’ facilities. Chania is close enough for evenings out – but this is one resort where staying in hardly feels like settling.
