Don’t let the slightly playful name fool you – Happy Cretan Suites is a seriously lovely little hideaway above Agia Pelagia. We particularly like its hillside location: instead of being squeezed into a busy beachfront strip, you get sweeping views across the Cretan Sea and some beautiful sunsets. The Cave Suites are the ones we would choose, with private pools and either sea or garden views; several other suites have outdoor hot tubs. There are two main pools, Greek and Cretan dining, yoga, massage and even live piano breakfasts on selected days. For an early summer trip to Crete, we wanted to find the best all-inclusive hotel that would be both family-friendly and offer private pool rooms. We finally booked a room at this magical 5-star hotel outside the town of Rethymno. And it was among the best decisions we've made, the hotel was absolutely incredible. The various accommodations consisted of swim-up rooms with direct access to a shared swimming pool and stunning villa-style rooms with its own private pool. Most of them featured amazing panoramic views of the sea and the fantastic surrounding Greek landscape. The all-inclusive dining was in our opinion astonishingly good. Especially the Italian restaurant that served perhaps the best Carbonara we've ever had! Also, our kids (and to be honest, us adults too..) loved the kiosk at the beach that served unlimited ice cream and freshly made crepes every day. So, if your priorities are delicious food, heated pools and impeccable service in a family heaven - this is for you! Read more

Set right by the sea near Platanias, its earthy interiors and gardens feel far removed from the busier resorts around Chania.
